The managerial collaborations have distinct subjects. Chasing the Dream centers on Torre’s career and his arrival at a long-sought championship. The Yankee Years considers the broader period in which he managed New York. The Book of Joe presents Maddon’s perspective on leadership and baseball. Verducci’s independently reported work and collected journalism add other forms to the bibliography.

Baseball Books

Chasing the Dream: My Lifelong Journey to the World Series: Joe Torre recounts his baseball life and the path that led him to manage the Yankees in 1996. The memoir follows a career spent pursuing a World Series championship and describes the opportunity that arrived after his dismissal in St. Louis. Verducci collaborated on this account of Torre’s professional experiences and the Yankees season that fulfilled that ambition.

The Yankee Years: Written with Joe Torre, this book examines his twelve seasons managing the Yankees. It describes the team’s championships, postseason appearances, and changing roster while exploring the pressures surrounding the organization. The account considers relationships among players, management, and ownership, placing the work of managing personalities alongside the results achieved on the field during Torre’s tenure.

The Cubs Way: The Zen of Building the Best Team in Baseball and Breaking the Curse: Verducci investigates how the Cubs assembled and led the team that won the 2016 World Series. His reporting follows the work of Theo Epstein, Joe Maddon, and the players as the organization ended a championship drought lasting 108 years. The book connects the postseason run with roster construction, organizational culture, and the leadership decisions behind the championship.

The Book of Joe: Trying Not to Suck at Baseball and Life: Joe Maddon and Verducci present lessons drawn from Maddon’s life in professional baseball, including his years in the minor leagues and his work as a major league manager. The book examines leadership, relationships, and the creation of a productive team environment. Baseball experiences provide the basis for Maddon’s views about helping people perform and managing an organization.

Inside Baseball: This collection brings together Verducci’s baseball reporting for Sports Illustrated. Its subjects include prominent players, the changing balance between pitchers and hitters, records, and controversies within the sport. The selections show the range of his magazine work, combining accounts of achievement with examinations of difficult issues, including the use of performance-enhancing drugs in professional baseball.

Across these books, a championship can be both an event and the result of decisions made over several years. Verducci examines that distinction through a manager’s recollections, reporting on a front office, and individual magazine stories. The collection offers a broader range of subjects, while the collaborations and team histories concentrate on particular people and organizations.
