Dave Proudlove

Dave Proudlove, also published as David Proudlove, is a writer whose soccer books examine the relationship between the game and its surroundings. His subjects include stadium relocation, industrial communities, and informal street play. Rather than organizing every account around a leading player or manager, he investigates the places where soccer develops and the people who sustain it, from club volunteers to supporters watching their teams move away.

His journalism includes a weekly column in the North Staffordshire newspaper The Sentinel that ran for more than a decade. He contributed to the Stoke City fanzine Duck and has written for The Football Pink, The Way We Were, and the Forgotten Football Clubs blog. His books include When the Circus Leaves Town, Work and Play, and the 2026 publication Street Football.

Proudlove’s published work also includes Ballad of the Streets. His sports writing draws on visits to towns, cities, and former industrial districts, using conversation and observation to connect soccer with everyday life. His publisher describes interviews with club officials, developers, politicians, supporters, and volunteers across these projects. Those participants provide different perspectives on decisions whose consequences extend beyond the field.

The three soccer books below consider different stages of the game’s relationship with place. Street Football looks at informal spaces in which players first develop skills. Work and Play examines the origins and survival of clubs connected with employment and industry. When the Circus Leaves Town follows the disruption caused when established clubs exchange familiar grounds for new homes. Together, their subjects range from improvised games to large redevelopment schemes.

He also produces material for the Football Heritage website and podcast and collaborates with artists and other writers. A 2026 Stoke Book Festival event at Stoke Minster presented Street Football through an author conversation and audience questions. That public-facing work accompanies books concerned with how soccer history survives in local memories, physical spaces, and the activities of communities that continue to play and support the game.

Soccer Books

When the Circus Leaves Town: What Happens When Football Leaves Home: Proudlove investigates what happens when soccer clubs leave their traditional grounds. Traveling through former stadium sites and new developments, he talks with supporters, officials, developers, and politicians about the reasons for relocation and its effects. The book considers disrupted matchday routines, altered neighborhoods, and the difficulty of preserving shared memories when a familiar sporting landmark disappears. Published in 2022.

Work and Play: The Industrial Roots of English Football: This study follows the industrial roots of English soccer through clubs founded around workplaces and working communities. Proudlove visits post-industrial towns and cities, examining grounds and former grounds while speaking with supporters, volunteers, and officials. Professional clubs form part of the story, but the continuing connection between industry and grassroots or semi-professional teams is equally important. Published in 2024.

Street Football: The Real Grassroots of the Beautiful Game: Proudlove explores informal soccer in streets, alleys, small-sided pitches, and other spaces outside the professional game. Accounts from northern England, Rio de Janeiro, and Marseille consider how improvised rules, local rivalries, and neighborhood life shape developing players. Historical material and personal experience connect those settings with the creativity, resilience, and techniques later visible in organized competition. Published in 2026.
