Arthur James O’Dea

Arthur James O’Dea is an Irish sports broadcaster and author whose books focus on hurling. He comes from Sligo and lives in Dublin. His professional work includes researching and producing Off The Ball, where he has served as a senior producer. He earned a doctorate from Dublin City University in 2019. His interest in Limerick hurling came through his father, who was born in the county.

O’Dea’s first book, Limerick: A Biography in Nine Lives, was published in 2022. It presents the county’s hurling history through individual lives. His second, Mackey and Ring, appeared in August 2026 and considers two major figures in the sport, Mick Mackey and Christy Ring. The later book was shortlisted for the 2026 Irish Book Awards sports book prize. Both works use biography to examine the relationship between players, communities, and the memories surrounding a sport.

His connection with Limerick is personal rather than a consequence of having grown up in the county. In a 2022 interview with The Irish Times, he described the allegiance passed down by his father and the emotions involved in following the team. The same interview explained his preference for a book organized around people instead of a continuous chronology. The resulting structure allows different periods of Limerick hurling to emerge through the experiences of particular participants.

The first book’s subjects include Eamonn Cregan, Stephen Lucey, and Nickie Quaid. Its coverage incorporates the development of Limerick’s academy and the conflict surrounding the team in 2009 and 2010. Family testimony and the experiences of individual players contribute to a history that also addresses the county’s later success. The nine-life format connects these episodes without treating them as a season-by-season record.

Hurling Books

Limerick: A Biography in Nine Lives: O’Dea tells the history of Limerick hurling through nine people associated with the county’s game. Individual careers, family experiences, institutional development, and difficult periods contribute to the wider account. Rather than follow a single chronological narrative, the book uses biographical portraits to consider how Limerick’s sporting identity developed and how successive generations experienced its disappointments and achievements. Published in 2022.

Mackey and Ring: This joint biography examines Mick Mackey and Christy Ring as players and as enduring figures in hurling’s collective memory. A 1957 photograph by Justin Nelson provides a starting point for considering their careers, encounters, and reputations. O’Dea explores the ordinary lives behind their public standing and the ways later storytelling shaped their sporting legacies. Published in August 2026.

In Mackey and Ring, the scope moves from a county’s history to a comparison between two men whose reputations extended across the hurling world. The book considers their places within the Gaelic Athletic Association and the cultural circumstances that helped turn sporting achievement into folklore. Their importance continued beyond retirement, despite the limited surviving film of the eras in which they played. Gill’s publication details date the second book to August 27, 2026, and identify it as a 320-page joint biography. The Irish Book Awards description emphasizes the development of the men’s reputations over decades, including the years after their playing careers. This extends the biographical inquiry from what Mackey and Ring accomplished to how later generations remembered them and maintained their standing within the sport.
