His published work ranges from carefully researched lives to books that assemble photographs and literary extracts around a theme. Kicking the Bar uses private correspondence and family material to investigate a public career; Porches pairs buildings with the language of American writers. The poetry pamphlet Tiny Disturbances appeared in 2012. Wheldon’s author biography places him in north London with a family of three sons, a personal background that also connects with his collection on fatherhood.
Boxing Books
The Fighting Jew: The Life and Times of Daniel Mendoza, Champion Boxer: Wheldon examines Daniel Mendoza, England’s boxing champion from 1792 to 1795, and his influence on a sport then dominated by physical force. Technical innovation and public performance accompany the career of a Jewish fighter confronting prejudice. The biography connects Mendoza’s methods and self-presentation with the social and political environment of Georgian Britain, considering why his importance extended beyond his championship record. Published in 2019.
Mendoza’s smaller stature made movement and defensive skill especially important to his approach. Wheldon describes a boxer associated with sidestepping and a more systematic understanding of technique, placing those changes within the development of prizefighting. Publicity and celebrity also mattered: Mendoza’s place in public life depended on his ability to manage attention as well as succeed in contests, giving the biography a social history alongside its account of the ring.
Other Books
Kicking the Bar: The Life and Legacy of Broadcaster Huw Wheldon: Wheldon traces the life of his father, Huw, from Welsh family roots and military service to a major role in British broadcasting. Letters, photographs, and family memories accompany accounts of the Arts Council, the Festival of Britain, television presentation, and BBC leadership. The biography combines a son’s recollections with an examination of the public-service ideals that shaped an influential media career. Published in 2016.
Porches: Wheldon pairs photographs of American porches with passages from writers associated with the places and experiences they evoke. More than fifty images move among different buildings and landscapes, while literary extracts add memories, atmosphere, and social meaning. The collection considers a familiar architectural space as a setting for family and community life, joining visual observation with an anthology of American voices. Published in 2003.
The Father and Child Companion: This illustrated collection celebrates fatherhood through poems, literary extracts, photographs, and activities.
