Mike Tyson is an American boxer, entertainer, and author who became the undisputed world heavyweight champion. Born in Brooklyn in 1966, he was introduced to the training system of Cus D’Amato as a teenager. D’Amato had previously worked with world champions Floyd Patterson and José Torres and became both Tyson’s trainer and a parental figure.
Tyson’s early professional career brought a succession of knockout victories. In 1986, aged twenty, he defeated Trevor Berbick for the World Boxing Council heavyweight championship. He subsequently held the World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation titles as well, becoming the first heavyweight to possess those three organizations’ championships simultaneously.

His years as a major sporting figure included championship victories, defeats, and periods away from competition. James Douglas ended his unbeaten record in 1990. Tyson later returned to championship boxing and fought Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis among other prominent heavyweights. His public life also included a rape conviction, imprisonment, financial problems, and bankruptcy, subjects discussed in his first autobiography.
Outside boxing, Tyson developed a career in entertainment. He appeared in The Hangover films and performed the autobiographical stage show Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth. The show brought accounts of his upbringing, sporting career, and personal experiences to a theatre audience. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2011.
Tyson’s books were written with Larry Sloman. Undisputed Truth covers his life from childhood through boxing success and subsequent difficulties. Iron Ambition: My Life with Cus D’Amato concentrates on the trainer who shaped his development, describing D’Amato’s methods and his position within the boxing business. Although both books are autobiographical, the second also examines D’Amato’s earlier career, his relationships with fighters, and his conflicts with powerful figures in the sport.
D’Amato’s role extended beyond boxing instruction. After Tyson’s mother died, the trainer adopted him when he was sixteen. Their relationship combined a shared household with physical preparation and psychological training for competition. D’Amato died before Tyson won the heavyweight championship, leaving Tyson to continue toward the title without the mentor who had directed his development during adolescence and his earliest professional fights.

Undisputed Truth: Tyson recounts his childhood in Brooklyn, his development as a boxer, and the rapid rise that made him the youngest heavyweight champion. Written with Larry Sloman, the memoir also covers violence, substance use, imprisonment, financial collapse, and damaged relationships. Later sections describe his family life and move into film and stage performance. The account follows the contrast between public sporting success and recurring personal crises, presenting Tyson’s own explanations of the choices and events that shaped his life.
Iron Ambition: My Life with Cus D'Amato: Tyson and Larry Sloman examine the life and influence of trainer Cus D’Amato, who developed Tyson as a fighter and took him into his household. The book describes D’Amato’s psychological methods, training principles, and earlier work with Floyd Patterson and José Torres. It also explores his opposition to organized-crime influence within boxing. Tyson connects those historical events with his own experiences and considers how D’Amato’s instruction continued to affect him after the trainer’s death.
