Talty began concentrating on SEC football after joining the Jackson newspaper in 2012. His Alabama reporting included sustained coverage of Saban’s program and interviews with former players, coaches, and staff members. He has appeared on The Paul Finebaum Show, ESPN, and national radio. That reporting background also extends to athletic-department finances and broadcast agreements, subjects that become central in his collaborative investigation of the college game’s changing structure.

The Leadership Secrets of Nick Saban: How Alabama's Coach Became the Greatest Ever: Talty examines the leadership practices behind Nick Saban’s sustained success at Alabama. Interviews with people who worked and played for Saban inform a discussion of recruiting, organization, preparation, and the expectations placed on a team. The book connects specific coaching decisions with lessons about managing people and maintaining standards, presenting Saban’s approach as a subject for readers beyond football. Published in 2022.

Talty’s sources include people who experienced Saban’s expectations directly, giving the account perspectives from within the program. Recruiting and developing players appear alongside the management of staff and the maintenance of an organizational culture. The emphasis on preparation connects everyday responsibilities with longer ambitions: sustained success depends on repeatedly meeting standards, rather than relying on a previous championship. Talty considers the practical demands of that approach as well as its application to leadership outside college athletics.

The Price: What It Takes to Win in College Football's Era of Chaos: Talty and Armen Keteyian investigate the pressures transforming major college football, including name, image, and likeness payments, the transfer portal, conference realignment, and media influence. Their reporting follows coaches, administrators, players, and other participants trying to operate under changing rules. The book examines the financial, physical, and emotional costs of a system in which established assumptions about amateur competition are breaking down. Published in 2024.

The reporting includes the forces behind the breakup of the Pac-12 and the influence of television money on institutional choices. Rather than treating recruiting, compensation, and realignment as separate developments, the authors examine how those changes interact. They also consider what the demands of this environment mean for coaches whose careers and finances depend on competitive results, and for the players whose movement and earning power have become central to the business.

Lane Being Lane: The Story of Lane Kiffin, College Football’s Agent of Chaos: This biography follows Lane Kiffin through a coaching career marked by tactical success, abrupt departures, public disputes, and repeated reinvention. Talty examines his time with major college programs and the Oakland Raiders, connecting the personal story with a changing football industry. The account also considers how Kiffin’s public communication and willingness to provoke rivals became part of his professional identity. Published in 2026.
