Graeme Strachan

Graeme Strachan is a Scottish journalist and sports author based in Dundee. His work for The Courier and DC Thomson includes features and historical material for the publisher’s Past Times coverage in print and online. His books draw on Scottish soccer history, examining periods when Dundee attracted international attention and the individual experiences of players whose careers included both success and severe setbacks.

His first book, The Bird & The Feather, appeared in 2019 and followed Claudio Caniggia and Fabrizio Ravanelli at Dundee. Brawls, Bribes and Broken Dreams returned to the club’s European Cup campaign of 1962–63. The 2026 biography Billy Mackay: Miracle Man examines the Rangers winger whose career was interrupted by a serious injury before an unexpected return with Hearts.

Strachan was also part of the team behind The Courier’s Caniggia documentary, made for the twentieth anniversary of the Argentine player’s arrival in Dundee in October 2000. His work on the club therefore extends across books, newspaper features, and documentary production. These projects connect local archives and recollections with events that reached an audience far beyond the city.

The Mackay biography developed from a Courier feature published in February 2025. The player’s family responded to the article, and the subject expanded into a book about his football life. Its attention to the effects of enforced retirement and life after the game places the sporting story within a longer personal history. Strachan’s earlier Dundee books similarly examine consequences that continued after the matches most often remembered.

Brawls, Bribes and Broken Dreams: How Dundee Almost Won the European Cup: This account follows Dundee’s European Cup campaign after the club won the Scottish league in 1962. Preparation in New York leads into games against established European opponents, with the victory over Cologne and eventual meeting with AC Milan central to the story. Strachan examines the players, disputes, crowd trouble, and controversial circumstances surrounding an unexpected run toward the final. First published in 2022.

Billy Mackay: Miracle Man: Strachan follows Billy Mackay from a highly regarded teenage prospect at Rangers through the knee injury that forced retirement at twenty-three. The biography recounts his years at Ibrox, relationships with managers and teammates, and the psychological effects of losing his career. His unexpected comeback with Hearts in 1986 places him within one of Scottish soccer’s most dramatic title races. Published in 2026.

Mackay’s experiences include major European games, a League Cup medal, and the troubled Anglo-Scottish Cup encounter at Chesterfield in 1980. The later sections explain how he returned after a year away and joined Hearts during their pursuit of a league-and-cup Double. His life after playing, including an unexpected move into undertaking, broadens the account beyond an injury-and-recovery narrative and follows the practical task of building another career.

The Bird & The Feather: Caniggia and Ravanelli's Dundee Adventures: Strachan follows the period when Claudio Caniggia and Fabrizio Ravanelli brought international reputations to Dundee. The account explains how the arrival of established stars changed expectations and attracted attention beyond the sports pages. Their time at the club forms part of a wider story of ambition and financial instability that eventually led to administration and threatened Dundee’s survival. Published in 2019.
