Alan Maimon is an American journalist and author whose sports books focus on baseball. A Philadelphia native and Brown University graduate, he began his professional writing career in the Berlin bureau of The New York Times. His newspaper work later included the Louisville Courier-Journal and the Las Vegas Review-Journal. He received a Fulbright fellowship to study and work in Austria.
Maimon’s reporting has covered criminal justice, policing, and life in eastern Kentucky, as well as sports. A Courier-Journal series to which he contributed was a finalist for the 2004 Pulitzer Prize in Public Service. His baseball bibliography includes an independently written biography, an examination of the draft with Chuck Myron, and collaborations with players and a manager recounting their careers. His collaboration with Dave Winfield, Touching All the Bases, was published in September 2026.

Several of these books connect athletic achievement with experiences away from competition. The Victorino biography considers childhood and the minor leagues, the Raines memoir addresses addiction and recovery, and Winfield’s account examines power and conflict within professional baseball. Maimon’s non-sports reporting also resulted in Twilight in Hazard: An Appalachian Reckoning, an account of eastern Kentucky based on his work in the region.
Baseball Books
Shane Victorino: The Flyin' Hawaiian: Maimon follows Shane Victorino from childhood in Maui through years of uncertainty in the minor leagues to success with the Philadelphia Phillies. The biography considers his athletic energy, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, and persistence when his professional prospects appeared limited. Victorino’s development and the support around him provide the background to a career that included a World Series championship. Published in 2011.
Mouth That Roared: My Six Outspoken Decades in Baseball: Dallas Green recounts six decades of baseball in this collaboration with Maimon. His experiences as a pitcher, manager, and executive include leading the Phillies to their first World Series championship and working for the Cubs, Mets, and Yankees. The memoir combines professional judgments and clubhouse recollections with the personal impact of his granddaughter’s death in the 2011 Tucson shooting. Published in 2013.
Hits and Misses in the Baseball Draft: What the Top Picks Teach Us about Selecting Tomorrow's Major League Stars: Maimon and Chuck Myron examine why identifying future major league stars through the draft remains uncertain. The book considers the gap between expectations and results, including injuries, performance problems, and the physical and psychological difficulties prospects encounter. Examples from the draft’s history show how teams evaluate young players and why even highly regarded selections can fail to establish professional careers. Published in 2014.
Jim Palmer : Nine Innings to Success: A Hall of Famer's Approach to Achieving Excellence: Jim Palmer organizes lessons from his life around nine subjects associated with success, including learning, perseverance, trust, and appreciation. Written with Maimon, the book considers his development as a pitcher, his relationships within the Orioles organization, and his later broadcasting and business activities. Personal difficulties and professional achievements supply examples of sustaining performance across different stages of a career. Published in 2016.
Rock Solid: My Life in Baseball's Fast Lane: Tim Raines recounts his playing life from his emergence with the Montreal Expos through later major league seasons and eventual Hall of Fame recognition. This collaboration with Maimon addresses the speed and hitting that defined his career alongside cocaine addiction and recovery. Recollections of teammates and professional setbacks place individual achievement within a longer account of rebuilding and persistence. Published in 2017.
Touching All the Bases: A Story of Power, Purpose, and Surviving the Bronx: Dave Winfield revisits his baseball career and conflicts with Yankees owner George Steinbrenner in this collaboration with Maimon. The memoir considers race, public reputation, charitable work, and the use of power within professional sports. Winfield connects achievements on the field with the effort to defend his name and establish a lasting role beyond his years as a player. Published in 2026.
